1. Should the government be involved with making laws to prevent the obesity epidemic? Explain! Should individuals have to pay more for their health insurance if they are unhealthy due to their own life choices (i.e eating poorly, not exercising, smoking, drinking, using drugs, etc.)
2. Share a Healthy Recipe with the class! Provide Recipe and Ingredients.
I feel that government regulation would go a long way toward removing some of the worst parts of our diet. Limits on additives, sugars, and caffeine would obviously benefit everyone. But I don’t know what sort of laws could be passed to stop people from becoming obese. Laws could curb the epidemic, but I don’t know what those laws would be. Would you set limits on serving sizes at restaurants? Use a tracker to monitor daily physical activity? Limit what could be sold? Perhaps candy, soda, chips, and other junk food could be taxed in the same way that luxury items and cigarettes are, with a higher tax rate perhaps people would ingest less of this garbage. I do not have the answer. As to paying more for insurance, people with preexisting conditions and high risk are often already stuck paying more, if not in premiums then in additional care. Penalties for unhealthy behavior is another item that seems like a good idea, but would be difficult to implement and enforce.
I don’t know how healthy this is, but it’s one I use. I like McDonald’s breakfast burritos, but I’m about 100% sure that they’re bad for me. I found this recipe for breakfast burritos on the Art of Manliness website and there are a whole lot less unknowable’s in these burritos. This recipe will make you 14 big breakfast burritos and they freeze nicely, so you have breakfast for two weeks from this.
Breakfast Burrito Recipe
- 18 eggs
- 14 flour tortillas
- 1 bag of shredded cheese
- 2 16 oz. packages of breakfast sausage
- 1 white onion
- 2 green bell peppers
This is going to take you about an hour and thirty minutes to prepare and clean-up, but the above will get you 14 hefty-sized breakfast burritos for a little over a dollar apiece.
These burritos are at least 1.5X the size of those at McDonald’s, but you will get less artificial additives and plenty of sausage in your burrito. They would probably be healthier with less sausage, but at least it’s real sausage and not some mystery meat. I’ve also substituted ham or bacon in for the sausage, I imagine they would be good with a combination of meats as well, but now you’re upping the amount of time they take to prepare.
Step 1: Prepare and Cook Onion and Pepper
Dice up the onion and the green peppers and then sauté for 10 minutes or until softened.
Step 2: Cook Sausage
28 ounces is a lot of sausage to cook, so it’s going to take some time. You can start getting the eggs ready while you’re waiting for it to cook. After the sausage has been browned, put it in a bowl and set it aside for the burrito building stage later on.
Step 3: Scramble Eggs
Crack 18 eggs into a giant bowl. Add a splash of milk and some salt and pepper. Scramble. Cook eggs on high heat for large, dense egg curds.
Step 4: Build Burritos
We’ve got all our ingredients prepared, so it’s time to start building. Place a tortilla on a medium-sized sheet of foil. Pile on the ingredients to your heart’s desire. I started off with a layer of egg, followed by a generous helping of sausage, followed by some onion and pepper, and topped with some cheese.
Step 5: Wrap Burrito
Wrap up the ingredients in the tortilla to create your burritos. You should be seeing a good looking breakfast burrito at this point.
Don’t wrap the burritos in the foil right away. You want to let them cool a bit so you don’t build up condensation inside the foil and consequently create icy crystals on your burrito. Obviously, this means your whole kitchen counter will be filled with burritos resting on squares of foil. Alternatively, you can let all your ingredients cool, and then wrap each one up, foil and all. Repeat this burrito-building process until you’ve used all your ingredients.
Step 6: Place in Freezer
Write the date you cooked your burritos on the foil with a marker. They last about three weeks.
Step 7: Heat Up and Enjoy Your Burrito!
Loosely wrap your frozen burrito in a paper towel. Between 2:30 and 2:45 seems to be the right amount of time for warming up these burritos. Flip it over halfway though. When you take it out, let it cool a minute before you dig in.
