I’m sitting at home today because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Although, I don’t remember my boss actually mentioning that it was a holiday for us this year. But the banks are closed, and while I have other clients, if the banks are closed I assume I have the day off. If I’m wrong, well, it’ll come out of my PTO.

I didn’t watch much football this weekend, or much this whole season if I’m being honest. I didn’t even follow the Lions, mostly because they were not good. Not good at all. I did see the Texans@Chiefs in the divisional round and last night I watched parts of the Packers@49ers. I think I would have preferred to see the Chiefs vs. Packers in the Super Bowl, but it was very obvious last night that the 49ers are the better team. So we get the 49ers vs Chiefs playing in the big game… that’s going to be a lot of red. Should be a good game. Looking forward to the commercials 😉

My plan for today is to do some writing, play some guitar, do some laundry, put together a new selection of music for the garage stereo, straighten the garage, and maybe write a blog post. Okay, so I’m working on that last one right now. The writing hasn’t been quite as prolific as I’d hoped thus far this year. Really, one day out of 20 is bad, but even 1 in 20 is better than my average. Still. I want to do better. I missed one day of guitar practice last week and am feeling disproportionately guilty about that. While Lady Ronn is not in school tonight, I still don’t expect to see her anytime before it gets dark. I guess what I’m saying is, the day is mine to do what I want with.

Speaking of guitar, one of the biggest problems I’m having is keeping time. I can’t seem to keep time consistent. I can’t tap my foot and play guitar at the same time. I tried using a metronome and it was a disaster. I don’t understand why it’s 3/4 time instead of just 3/3 time, because I’m just counting three instead of four. I can’t seem to make my half notes twice as long as my quarter notes, or at least not consistently. And tomorrow we’re supposed to add eighth notes to the mix. I think my lack of any musical background at all is showing. But on my own and with the encouragement of my boss, who has played guitar for 30-years, I’ve tried to add some chords to my practice. I can’t do those either. My fingers are all over the strings, making a mess of things. But practice continues and I’m hopeful that improvement will come eventually. Any tips? I welcome any and all.

You’re probably sick of me talking about guitar. In my defense, it’s the thing I’m doing and I’m enthusiastic about it. Tomorrow I’m going to talk about audiobooks. Is that better or worse? I’d like to do my taxes today, but while I’ve received my W2 I’m still waiting for two others and some other documents. I did start the paperwork and, expecting a refund, I’ve started figuring out where that money will go. Most likely, it’ll go into the “pay off that new camera” fund. Which doesn’t sound like much fun, but is definitely the responsible thing to do. Being an adult is all about the responsible thing. It’s one of the main things I dislike about being an adult. It is what it is. What can you do.

I need to do a couple work-related things now. Despite the holiday. Just a few things that need to be addressed in order to make the coming week a more bearable experience. We’ll talk again. Later.

It is time for family and food to come together and celebrate a day of parades, football, and pie. So much pie. Okay, so its really about family getting together and for recognizing all the blessings that have been laid upon you, your life, and the lives of your family.

Enjoy the day. Enjoy the company. Enjoy the season. Happy Thanksgiving from me to you and yours.

falcons vs. patriots

I don’t have a dog in this race. Neither team does anything for me. I’d like to see the Patriots lose just to torment my buddy Denis. I’d like to see the Patriots win and watch Brady make history. I’d like to see the Falcons win because Matt Ryan has had a lot of ups and downs. I guess I’ll just watch the game and see what happens.

Welcome to a profanity laced tirade on the futility of playing Madden football with my brother. Yes, as I’m sure you all expected, the 1st and Ten second season Super Bowl was a complete flop. We tried three times. We tried three times for the first season Super Bowl. And I think we tried at least four times early in season one. It didn’t work then. It doesn’t work now. The Online Connected Franchise desync error has pushed me over the edge of madness. I must say my peace.

And, as an added bonus, you can occasionally hear junior and his buddy playing Smash Brothers in the background.

I played an awful game of Madden tonight, which is too bad, given that it was the Super Bowl. I threw five, FIVE, interceptions and lost the game after holding onto a two score lead for most of the second half. 45-42, Chiefs over the Lions. Third ring for my brother. No video.

Are you playing Madden25 in owner mode? Are you looking to escape a city that isn’t willing to cough up the money to build you a stadium? Are you just looking for a change of scenery? One thing you have to keep in mind is that if you move, you don’t get to keep your nickname. And the number of city choices is limited. There will be no Grand Rapids Lions. There can be no Nashville Chiefs. So what can you do? Here is a list of the Madden25 team relocation options and nicknames.
U.S. Choices:

  • Austin (Armadillos, Bats, Desperados)
  • Brooklyn (Beats, Dodgers, Yanks)
  • Chicago (Blues, Cougars, Tigers)
  • Columbus (Aviators, Caps, Panhandles)
  • Houston (Gunners, Oilers, Voyagers)
  • Los Angeles (Aftershock, All Stars, Dreams)
  • Memphis (Egyptians, Hounds, Steamers)
  • Oklahoma City (Bisons, Night Hawks)
  • Orlando (Orbits, Sentinels, Wizards)
  • Portland (Lumberjacks, River Hogs, Snowhawks)
  • Sacramento (Condors, Miners, Redwoods)
  • Salt Lake City (Elks, Flyers, Pioneers)
  • San Antonio (Dreadnoughts, Express, Marshalls)

International Choices:

  • Dublin (Celtic Tigers, Derbys, Shamrocks)
  • London (Black Knights, Bulldogs, Monarchs)
  • Mexico City (Conquistadors, Diablos, Golden Eagles)
  • Toronto (Huskies, Mounties, Thunderbirds)

If you relocate your team, you have choices, but not many choices. The names in paranthasis are your options for nicknames… your only choices. Each nickname comes with three uniform designs. There’s a “traditional” design, a “modern” design, and one other, but the color schemes are fixed.
Compare these options with NCAA Football’s Teambuilder function, which gives you almost complete control over your team logos, colors, uniforms, nickname, etc. The technology obviously exists, but probably the NFL wants to exercise a bit more control over their product and branding than the NCAA used to allow, and EA isn’t going to poke the bear.

Back in the day, way back, I’m talking ESPN 2K5 days. That’s like 2004. I was working at MCI WorldCom. There were a bunch of us guys with Xboxes. We played some games. Halo, TopSpin, and football. We had LAN parties. We had Xbox Live. And we had an online league for football. We called, or rather, I named it, First and Ten. It went on for two seasons. There was a trophy and everything. I loved it. I’ve never been able to get a group of guys together like that since. Ah, the good old days.
FirstAndTen

I didn’t get to watch the Broncos Patriots game, but I did get the pleasure of listening to it on a radio station that lacked a certain amount of clarity. The Seahawks 49ers game was on my television, but wasn’t really doing it for me. But both games are over and now we know who is going to the super bowl…

I’m rooting for the Broncos, for Payton Manning, and for the memories of our Xbox football league back in the MCI days.

Lions

My brother had some difficulty facilitating a trade before season three in our Madden 25 franchise, so I was forced to retire my character and build a new one. The newest version of myself in the game is on the Detroit Lions. My brother is running with the Kansas City Chiefs. As of week 14 we’re both undefeated and putting up huge numbers in our rookie seasons. I expect a Superbowl match-up to determine who gets all the marbles and the bragging rights.

The Wildfire-Hydra offense I’m running is a high-speed, no huddle, multi-threat nightmare for opposing defenses. I think I’m up for a rumble.

Well, according to Punxsutawney Phil, we are in for another six weeks of winter. No surprise there for me, it stays pretty cold here in Michigan through at least March. Phil’s not to good at giving us a short winter, seems he’s seen his shadow 94 out of 118 times. That means spring has only come early 14 times since they started this nonsense.

Well, I didn’t get to see the Super Bowl. Not a single minute of it. Looked like it was a good game on the SportsCenter game tracker and what I heard of it on the radio made the end of the game sound quite exciting. But in the end the New England Patriots come away with the win over the Carolina Panthers, final score.

32 New England Patriots
29 Carolina Panthers

I’m sure it was quite thrilling for those of you who did get to watch it. Don’t mind me, I’m just bitter.
