Well, I put on jeans today to work on the garage for the first time this season. I guess winter really is coming and summer is over. Bummer.

I’m trying to make a decision about the future of this website. My hosting is up for renewal and if I don’t renew things will go dark on November 13th. For the first time in a lot of years, I’m considering letting that happen. I haven’t posted since my birthday in August (and that wasn’t much of a post), prior to that it was just images on Saturdays until that queue went dry. I’ve made a conscious decision to step away over the last few months, just to see what it felt like to not post–to not have a website. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t good. It was just something I didn’t do for a bit.

I guess what I’m asking is, does it matter to anyone but me? I pretty-much already know the answer to this question. But I’m still struggling with the idea of letting it go.

There are other hosting options, both paid and free, but that’s not thinking right now. What I’m thinking about is, do I want to have a website or not? Is it worth the time, money, and effort? Are there other things that I could dedicate those three things too that I would get more reward from? I have a few weeks left, but I just thought I would share my dilemma with you.

Should I stay or should I go?

more guitar practice

A friend asked me, today, if I was playing guitar. I had to laugh, because, I don’t really play the guitar, so much as I practice the guitar. To play infers some degree of musicality to the thing. There is really very little music being made here. But, yes, I continue to wrestle with this project I’ve embarked on to learn to play the guitar. I’m working on simple bar chords and the G and C chords and transitioning between the two. I’m not finding it particularly easy. I think I’ve hit the first wall. Really, what I need to work on is timing and counting out my measures. I’ve been a little frustrated and I must admit that I haven’t dedicated near as much time as I promised myself. I was told by Guitar Center that it may be August or October before they start in person lessons again, so I really need to rededicate myself and get on top of this whole discipline thing.

I think my fingers are getting better, but I am not a “natural” guitarist. This is all work and not much fun. Enjoyable, but not fun.

I’ve started a series of summer projects that I’m contracting out. I put a deposit down on getting my roof replaced. Should get done in the next 3-weeks or so. I’m having the same company, Avalon, replace my chain link fence with a pine, shadowbox privacy fence. That starts this coming Thursday. And I’m getting the electrical box, meter, and drop upgraded to a 200 amp circuit. Oh, and I’m getting a breaker panel added to the garage as well. That was supposed to have happened last Thursday, but storms in the area caused the utility to cancel the appointment due to address outages. Very excited about getting all that done.

I’ve got plans drawn up for a 12 x 20 shed with an attached 8 x 8 greenhouse and a 4-foot wide porch. The plan also includes screening in the covered patio and building a deck over the open patio. The deck will extend 6-feet past the existing patio and wrap along the side of the covered patio. I’m going to have to get a permit for all that work. You know what… here’s a picture. That’ll save a thousand words.

the red items are the changes/additions

Oh, and because I haven’t put enough on my plate, I’m just waiting for the inspection on the electrical stuff before adding a door and drywalling the garage. Maybe then I can get the garage put back together and get the car back inside. And of course, I really am getting motivated to get the laundry room and common area of the basement finished, primed, and painted.

We picked up paint for the front room and plants for the planters at Home Depot on Saturday. Those are things that probably need to be done as well.

I’ve got a lot of plans. Maybe too many plans. It’ll be fine. Later.

I decided to make a thing for Lady Ronn. She has always complained that when sitting on the back patio, there is very little privacy from the neighbors. Truth be told, the bedroom window faces this same view, so the privacy there is compromised as well. Inside, the choice is to close the blinds. Outside, the only choice is to stay inside.

my not-so-private privacy fence

So on the way home from work Friday, I picked up some 4×4 posts. Then I dug some holes with my post hole digger. The frost line here in michigan is 42″ below grade. It’s been a long time since I dug down that far with a post hole digger. And I did it three times Friday evening. Had it done before my lady even made it home. Then, because that wasn’t enough fun, I dragged out four 80-pound bags of concrete and one 60-pound bag of mortar that I had in the garage, carried them around the house, mixed them up and dumped them in the holes. I feel both very accomplished and very tired.

My plan is to make a combination privacy screen and planter box that will sit in the little strip of lawn between the patio and the air conditioner. This will provide some privacy from the neighbors, muffle the sound and eliminate the view of the air conditioner, and fancy up the patio with some plants. The final project will combine the features of these two privacy screens and be made out of cedar. I may include a couple of drawers in the bottom for storage, not sure just yet.

ideas from Google image search

So far, all I’ve done is set the posts. The budget was a little tight this pay period, so I haven’t picked up the cedar boards just yet. Which is fine, I’ve got lots of other projects in the pipeline.

Oh, hey, in that first picture you can see the frame of what was once a patio table. I’m going to try something with that as well. I’m going to pick up enough cedar to put planks in where the glass used to be. It’ll involve some customization and some alteration, but I think I can make it work. Then I’ll have a table that matches the privacy screen.

For now, I’m going to let the concrete set-up, remove the grass in that area, and put in lawn edging from the far side of the air conditioner over to the patio, lay down some landscape fabric, and put stone all throughout that area.

Anybody need any logs? I’ve got 4 good size logs that I don’t want or need.

I didn’t get much done today. A little laundry. Some dishes. Making a list of the paperback novels that make up the holes in my collection. And the big thing, which really isn’t, is that I finally put the drawers for my desk-leaf on their slides.

already started filling them with junk

I made the drawers months ago. They’ve just been sitting in their bays waiting for slides and faces. Now they’re just waiting for the faces, which I have not made yet.

Right now, I have a strong inclination that just buying a desk would have been the better decision. I’m sure it’ll be very nice when it’s done. I just don’t know when that might be. 😉

My email has been full with pre-deals, sale previews, and early price drops for two weeks. I’m sure yours has too. So money was bound to get spent. i can only stand up to that kind of pressure for so long. My personal BLACK FRIDAY shopping spree started on Tuesday at Home Depot.

All of my shopping has been at either the big box home centers or Amazon. And I did NOT leave the house on Friday. Saturday and Sunday, but not Friday. I let Lady Ronn do that particular brand of madness.

no black friday shopping for me

On Tuesday I picked up a new 6-pc. set of Rigid battery powered tools and took advantage of the pick two freebies, I also grabbed a 3-1/2″ framing nail gun by Porter Cable. The nail gun is something that I’ve been waiting for a price drop on, the Rigid stuff… yeah, that was an impulse buy.

Then on Saturday, I went to Menards and took advantage of their R-15 insulation deal. They were offering a $9 rebate per roll, so that brings the price down to $2.99 for an 18-foot roll. I have a garage to insulate and I couldn’t pass that up. I had to go back for a second load today, and while I was there I picked up a heater for the garage. So now I have two new projects that I don’t have time to do.

So much good stuff
my weekend haul

I don’t want to even talk about the stuff I bought from Amazon, but they’ve been keeping my credit card busy all weekend. And I’ve been told that the Friday outing went well. Which I assume means money was spent. Sounds like we’ve done our part to keep the US economy rolling along.

So what’s on sale Cyber Monday?
